How to Recognize That It’s Time for Assisted Living

Updated: Sep 30, 2022

Being concerned about the happiness, health, and independence of those we love is a feeling that lasts a lifetime. In time, however, it is important to consider the possibility that a loved one might be ready for a change in lifestyle.

Whether using independent living facilities, assisted living services, or hospice care, a reputable and experienced senior placement service can provide the best quality of life. When is it time to move your loved one into an assisted living facility? A transition may be beneficial if several key signs are present.

Safety:

If you are considering an assessment for elevated care, one of the most important questions to ask yourself is about your loved one's safety. There may be a need for an evaluation of assisted living if new safety issues have emerged or if small issues are becoming worse.

Driving issues:

Are you concerned that your loved one has become a more dangerous or distracted driver? Damaged or poorly maintained vehicles may make driving difficult or even present a potential hazard.

Kitchen Mishaps:

Failure to use safe practices in the kitchen is one of the most common safety hazards for individuals in need of an assessment. There are some kitchen mishaps that are obvious, such as fires or injuries. Pots and pans that have been scorched or appliances that have been damaged are examples of subtle signs.

Frequent Falls or Injuries:

Assisted living facilities may be necessary if an individual has been injured frequently, especially because of slips and falls.

Wandering:

It is possible for an individual to become lost in his or her own home, moving from one room to another.

Physical and Health Issues:

Many individuals are still able to live independently or with the assistance of a visiting nurse despite deteriorating health. It is possible to detect signs of a health decline that are subtle, especially in cases of dementia or other cognitive impairments. Poor personal hygiene can sometimes be a result of cognitive decline. There are also times when the changes are accompanied by sudden weight losses, sudden weight gains, or becoming weak and frail.

Marked Behavioral Changes:

It is possible that major behavioral changes in your loved one are a sign that he or she needs outside assistance to improve their quality of life. These changes can occur as an increase in stress, anger, irritability, or desire for isolation. Feelings of loneliness, aggression, loss of interest in previous hobbies, and never leaving the house are all signs that it may be time to get evaluated. Mental health could be improved in an environment like assisted living.

Evaluation and Assessment

Ensure that your loved ones' home environment is safe and fulfilling by taking the steps necessary to ensure their well-being. You don't need to be intimidated when searching for the right placement situation for your loved one. Your loved one should be assessed to see what options are available to him or her.
